Flower care and questions
How to make your flowers last, and answers to what people ask at the counter.

Care tips
Care tips for cut flowers
1. Trim an inch off the stems at an angle with clean scissors.
2. Fresh water and flower food in a clean vase, and change the water every two days.
3. Keep them cool, out of direct sun and away from heating vents and ripe fruit.
4. Remove leaves below the water line, and any flowers that have faded.
Roses and mums last a week or more. Tulips and ranunculus last about five days.
Pets and flowers
Lilies are dangerous for cats. A little pollen on a paw or a sip of vase water can cause kidney failure, so please don’t bring lilies into a home with a cat. Tell us when you order and we’ll leave them out, and we’ll make any arrangement pet-friendly.
Other flowers can upset a dog’s or a cat’s stomach, so keep vases out of reach. If a pet eats a plant, call your vet or the ASPCA poison control line right away.
Questions we hear most
Delivery
Can you deliver today? What time do I need to order by?
Yes, in Northfield and Dundas. Order by 1 pm Central, Monday through Friday, or by 11 am on Saturday. An order after that goes out the next delivery day, and we’ll call you if that doesn’t work. We don’t deliver on Sundays.
Where do you deliver, and what does it cost?
Northfield or Dundas is $8. Dennison, Nerstrand and Lonsdale are $12. Faribault, Randolph and Cannon Falls are $16. Delivery to a funeral home, a church for a service or the hospital in Northfield or Dundas is free. The fee is added at checkout, so you see the total before you pay.
Do you deliver on Sundays and holidays?
Not on Sundays, except Valentine’s Day (Sunday, February 14, 2027) and Mother’s Day (Sunday, May 9, 2027), when we deliver. We’re closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. For Valentine’s Day, order by Wednesday, February 10; for Mother’s Day, order by Wednesday, May 5.
Can I pick a time for delivery?
You can ask for morning or afternoon in your card message, and we’ll try. We can’t promise a time, because the van runs one loop through town. If we can’t make the day you picked, we call you before the day is over and move it or refund you.
What if nobody is home?
We call the number you gave us, then leave the flowers with a neighbor or the front desk if there is one. If that doesn’t work, we bring them back to the shop and call you. We never leave flowers outside in freezing weather.
Your order
Will my arrangement look like the picture? What if you don’t have a flower?
The photo shows the style, not the exact flowers, because what’s best changes week to week. We keep the colors, the size and the value the same. If a flower isn’t available we substitute the closest match, or call you first if you chose that when you ordered. We never substitute something that’s worth less.
What if my flowers arrive wilted or wrong?
Tell us within 24 hours of delivery, with a photo if you can, and we’ll replace them or refund you. Call (507) 555-0142 or write hello@tamarackflowers.com.
Sympathy
How do I send flowers to a funeral home?
Order online or call. We need the name of the person who died, the funeral home or church and its town, and the date and time of the service or visitation. Order by 4 pm the day before for a morning service; for a service the same day, call us. Delivery to a funeral home in town is free.
What if I don’t know the service details yet?
Call us at (507) 555-0142 or send what you know, and we’ll call the funeral home to confirm. Please don’t guess a time: a wrong one can mean flowers that arrive after the service. We’d rather take a day to get it right.
Do you deliver to a cemetery or a family’s home?
Yes to a family’s home, at the regular fee for the town. For a graveside service we deliver to the cemetery office or the funeral home that’s handling it, and we call to confirm first. A funeral home, church or the hospital in Northfield or Dundas is free.
Weddings
Do you do wedding flowers? How do I start?
Yes. Send the wedding date, venue and budget on our weddings page, or book a free 45-minute consultation. We reply within two business days. We take two weddings a weekend, so ask 6 to 12 months ahead, and a $250 deposit holds your date.
Do you set up and take down at the venue?
We deliver and set up the ceremony and reception flowers, and we pick up our vases after, which is included in the delivery and setup fee on your proposal. If your venue needs them out earlier, we’ll plan around that.
What does the deposit cover, and is it refundable?
The $250 deposit holds your date and comes off your final bill. It’s refundable until we’ve begun your proposal, which is within a week of the consultation. After that it’s kept, because we’ve turned other couples away for that date.
Subscriptions
Do you have flower subscriptions? How do I cancel?
We sell a four-week plan: one payment, four weekly bouquets, and it ends on its own. It isn’t a subscription that renews, so there’s nothing to cancel and you’re never billed again unless you order another plan.
Care
How do I take care of my flowers?
Trim an inch off the stems at an angle, put them in a clean vase with fresh water and the flower food, change the water every two days and keep them out of direct sun and away from ripe fruit and heating vents.
Are these flowers safe around cats and dogs?
Lilies are dangerous for cats, even a little pollen or vase water. Tell us when you order and we’ll leave them out, and we’ll make any arrangement pet-friendly. Other common flowers can upset a dog’s stomach, so keep vases out of reach.
About us
Are you a real local shop? Where are you?
Yes. We’re at 214 Division Street in Northfield, Minnesota, and we’ve been there since 2016 (and in Northfield since 2011). Every order is made in our workroom by our own designers. We don’t use a wire service or fill orders through other shops, and we don’t deliver outside the towns on our delivery page.
Paying
Do you sell gift cards?
Yes, on our gift cards page, in any amount from $5 to $500. They’re emailed right away and they never expire. Use one at the counter, or to pay for a workshop on our site.
How do I pay?
By card, Apple Pay or Google Pay at checkout, or by phone. For weddings we email a secure link for the deposit and the balance. We don’t take payment by text message or ask for your card number by email.
